Holding a remarkable junior career record, he turned professional in 2011 and started playing for the Wellington Saints of the National Basketball League (NBL). Two years later, he entered the 2013 NBA draft and got signed by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the 12th overall pick. Steven remained an integral part of the Oklahoma City Thunder team for seven years before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. His stay with them was short, as he joined the Memphis Grizzlies in 2021. His impressive performances continued with them until an injury sidelined him for the entire 2023-24 NBA season.
