The Union Government has announced that it will be awarding the prestigious Bharat Ratna award to freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malaviya and former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of India and is given to individuals who do some exceptional work for their country.
The decision to confer the honor was taken during a meeting of the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. The announcement coincides with Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday on 25th December which already has been declared a “Good Governance Day” by the Government.

The inclusion of Madan Mohan Malaviya and Atal Bihari Vajpayee increases the total number of people who have been awarded Bharat Ratna up to 43. Some of the other well-known people in the list include singer Lata Mangeshkar, scientist CV Raman, politician C Rajagopalachari and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
